23 Interior Design Social Media Content Ideas

If you are an interior designer (or simply enjoy posting home decor) and need a few social media post ideas, I have the list just for you! I’ve broken down the content ideas into three types of posts. I use this strategy for all of my clients to set specific content goals in our social media calendars.

How to Make a Social Media Calendar for Interior Designers

Before we get to the ideas, let’s take a look at what a social media calendar for interior designers should look like. The first step to building out a content calendar is understanding your audience. After looking through comments, DMs, and your competitor’s posts across Instagram, Pinterest, TikTok, and any other social media channels, you may find that your audience is following your pages for home decor inspiration.

Although it’s very likely, it’s entirely possible your followers aren’t looking to you for inspiration. I’d recommend doing a quick and easy social media audit to better understand your audience. The following advice will still apply to you regardless, but the frequency may need to be adapted.

What Are The Types of Social Media Content?

Now that we know what our target audience wants from our social media mages, we need to curate our strategy to provide value to our followers. Valuable posts fall into one of the three types of social media content:

  1. Educational — Content that provides value through teaching something new. An example would be a graphic showing the health benefits of doing yoga daily.

  2. Inspirational — Content that leaves viewers with desires, goals, and ambition. An example would be a progress pic of someone participating in a weight loss program.

  3. Entertaining — Content that doesn’t focus on relaying new information, but instead plays on the emotions of existing knowledge. For example, a meme about a recent health fad that everyone is already talking about.

Since we’re focusing on home decor and interior design, content ideas we generate will most likely fall under the inspirational category. However, implementing educational and entertaining content into our social media content calendar can help diversify our profile and keep followers hooked.

Your educational interior design content ideas should focus on providing free, teachable moments to your followers. This type of content is best to grow your brand awareness. The goal of these should be to get followers to save your post or to turn lurkers into followers on your social media page. Some educational content ideas for interior designers are:

1. Problem-Solving with Clients

Did you struggle to find a couch that fit in that tiny space in the living room? Elaborate on your problem-solving and how you worked through the issue.

2. Question and Answer Sessions

This is a great tool for you to drive engagement. Whether your audience wants your ideas, or they are trying to understand concepts themselves, this is your opportunity to connect with your audience on a deeper level.

3. Color Theory

Help your followers understand why certain colors work, why colors don’t go well together, and when you can break color rules. Show your unique perspective to get bonus points and attention.

4. Your Tools and Knowledge

Talk about anything and everything from the ideal light temperature to the scale of an element relative to the room. This is your chance to prove your value through education.

5. Tutorials and How-To’s

Even though something like picking wall colors or sketching project plans may be a part of your daily life, sharing basic knowledge can be a great way to broaden your audience. You should aim to reach both complete newbies and other professionals until you find your niche.

Giving advice to finding great deals, sharing the tools you use, and any other shopping tips you may have can help you become a source of knowledge. This gives viewers a reason to follow your page.

Compare two different styles of design to spread knowledge on industry vocabulary to clients. An example would be outlining the key differences between minimalist design and contemporary design.

You can take a wide, landscape photo of your favorite design, crop the left and right sides into two different images, and share it as a continuous Instagram post that seamlessly transitions.

TikTok and Pinterest love do-it-yourself posts. They are saveable and shareable posts that will bring people back and generate some new followers.

Are your followers not keen on purchasing that Arhaus coffee table you just shared? Post a budget alternative they can check out instead! Explain why you like the expensive product, and how the budget alternative is equally as awesome.

If you just made the best color palette you’ve ever seen, share it! Everyone loves seeing unique color combinations and these posts get plenty of saves for future reference.

17. Current Trends

Talk about recent trends you noticed, or start some of your own to go viral. This is especially beneficial if your followers are also trendsetters rather than traditionalists.

Entertaining Interior Design Content Ideas

You can’t omit to have fun as a part of your social media content strategy. Even design and creative content should have moments for laughs and jokes. Here are some entertaining social media content ideas for design pages:

18. Behind the Scenes Videos

TikTok loves these! Show your day off during a furniture delivery or a brainstorming session to prove to everyone (not that you have to) that you’re hard at work.

19. Hidden Object Games

Whether you’re in a messy storage container or a newly designed living room, post a wide shot and have your followers try to find a hidden object. This is great for driving engagement and getting comments on your post.

20. Polls and Votes

Have your audience be a part of the fun and encourage them to vote on their favorite of two alternatives. Whether you use their suggestion or your own judgment is your own choice, but be ready to explain!

21. Your Mistakes (No Shame!)

Have you ever looked back at an old project or decision and thought, “that was a terrible idea?” Embrace the embarrassment and have a laugh at it with your followers, maybe even explain what went wrong for some bonus education points.

22. Timelapse

This one’s easy. Set your phone down in timelapse mode and record anything that takes longer than 30 minutes. The sped-up version is an intriguing way to show progress.

23. Your Day Off

Throw some diversity into your content calendar and share what you do on your day off. Whether it’s yoga, reading, a sport, or travel, it adds some depth and personality to your page.

The best way to implement your new content ideas is to create a content calendar. Although being timely and actively following trends is ideal for growing your Instagram following, it can be difficult to focus on social media growth when occupied with your job.
